The Century Of American Romance/Dreams series was McKenna’s contribution to Harlequin’s special project celebrating American romance across the twentieth century. American Pie, Saturday’s Child, and The Sensation all appeared in 1990, with each book set in a different decade and capturing the social mood of that period. The series continued into 1991 with A Loverboy and My Only One, and Kissed by the Sea followed in 1994.
Because each book takes place in a different era, the series has a more varied feel than McKenna’s other work from this period. Readers move from one historical moment to the next, with the romance shaped partly by the expectations and constraints of each decade. The books were written as standalone entries designed to work within the Harlequin American Romance line while also contributing to the larger Century of American Romance collection.
This series sits outside McKenna’s military romance niche but shares her direct storytelling approach and focus on the emotional connection between her central couple. For readers interested in her range beyond the mercenaries and military settings, the Century series offers a different look at her voice.
