The Carroll Monks series follows a San Francisco emergency room doctor whose work keeps crossing paths with criminal activity. Twice Dying (2000) introduced Monks as he stumbles into a case that combines medical mystery with violent crime. Blood Double (2002), To the Bone (2003), and Revolution No. 9 (2005) continued the series over five years.
McMahon draws on medical settings to create thrillers that feel grounded in procedure without becoming clinical. Monks is a working ER doctor, not a detective, which gives the series a different entry point into the crime genre than a typical police procedural.
