The Campbell and Carter series is Ann Granger’s most recent long-running mystery sequence. Mud, Muck and Dead Things (2009) launches the series, and eight books follow the two detectives through cases set in the English countryside. Death on the Prowl (2024) is the latest entry, showing Granger still at work in her familiar territory of rural British crime fiction.
The books take place in and around small villages where old grudges and hidden secrets make for dangerous company. Rack, Ruin and Murder (2011) and Bricks and Mortality (2013) both tie their crimes to decaying properties and the people attached to them. Dead in the Water (2015) shifts the setting to a local canal, while Rooted in Evil (2017) returns to the woodlands.
Readers who enjoy British village mysteries with a police procedural backbone will find a lot to like here. Granger had already written two other long mystery series before starting this one, so she brought years of practice to the format. The books can be read as standalones, but returning characters and ongoing relationships reward reading in order.
