The Camden books represent Jess Walter at a turning point in his career. Citizen Vince (2005) won the Edgar Award with its story of a mobster in witness protection who cannot leave his old life behind. The Zero (2006) took a different approach, following a cop through a fragmented, almost surreal post-9/11 New York.
These two novels show Walter’s range. One is a darkly comic crime story, the other is a disorienting literary experiment. Together they mark the period when Walter moved from genre fiction into something harder to categorize.
