Bull Hunter is one of Max Brand’s more unusual Western heroes. Rather than the typical sharp-eyed gunslinger, Bull is a big, clumsy man whom everyone has underestimated and mistreated. The first novel follows his transformation from a bullied laborer into a surprisingly effective fighter, driven not by violence but by a simple sense of right and wrong.
The sequel, Bull Hunter’s Romance, picks up the character’s story and explores what happens when a man known for his strength and shooting ability tries to live a quieter life. Brand was good at taking familiar Western formulas and adding an unexpected angle, and the Bull Hunter books are a strong example of that approach. The two novels work well as standalone reads, though they are best enjoyed in order.
