The Buckhorn series follows Joe Buckhorn, a young man of mixed heritage raised among the Comanche. He is an expert tracker and rifleman, and he sets out across the frontier to find out who his white father was. Along the way, he runs into the usual assortment of outlaws, corrupt officials, and frontier violence.
Three books appeared between 2016 and 2019. The identity quest gives these books a different hook from the typical “gunfighter drifts into town” setup, though there is still plenty of shooting. Joe’s mixed background also creates tension with both white settlers and Native peoples he encounters.
