Beyond his major narrative histories, Catton wrote extensively about the Civil War in shorter formats. The Civil War (1960) is a compact single-volume overview, while Gettysburg: The Final Fury (1963) focuses on a single battle. Waiting for the Morning Train (1972) is a memoir of growing up in small-town Michigan, where Civil War veterans were still part of the community.
His later non-fiction includes collections of essays, picture histories, and specialized studies. Reflections on the Civil War (1981) gathers his thoughts from a lifetime of research and writing about the conflict.
