Boxers & Saints is Gene Luen Yang’s most ambitious work — a two-volume graphic novel that examines the Boxer Rebellion from two sides of the conflict. Published in 2013, the paired books were National Book Award finalists and cemented Yang’s reputation as one of the most important voices in American comics.
Boxers follows Bao, a village boy who becomes a leader of the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fist. Saints follows Vibiana, an unwanted girl who finds belonging in a Christian missionary community. Yang lets both characters be sympathetic and flawed, refusing to reduce a complicated historical moment to simple good-versus-evil.
