Allison “Lex” Luther is a former US Army sergeant who returns to Boulder after her twin sister is murdered. When she witnesses two vampires trying to abduct her infant niece Charlie, a null who can weaken supernatural powers, Lex fights them off and survives, which should not be possible for an ordinary human. This confrontation reveals that she is a boundary witch, someone whose magic is tied to the threshold between life and death.
Boulder’s Old World is run by Maven, the cardinal vampire of Colorado, and Lex quickly finds herself pressed into service investigating threats to the supernatural community. Each book in the series puts her in a more complicated position: loyal to Maven’s authority but unwilling to follow orders that compromise her own ethics, and constantly trying to protect Charlie while managing her own rapidly growing abilities. The series has a stronger military-procedural feel than the Scarlett Bernard books, and Lex operates more as an investigator-enforcer than a cleanup crew.
The Boundary Magic series is set in the same Old World as the Scarlett Bernard and Disrupted Magic books, and the later installments include crossover characters and events. Readers new to the Old World can start here without prior knowledge of the other series, though the connections become richer if you have read the Los Angeles books.
