Bonnie Jo Campbell’s three standalone novels span more than two decades of her career. Q Road, her debut novel from 2002, is set in rural Michigan and follows the intersecting lives of people in a small farming community. Once Upon a River came out in 2011 and earned widespread attention for its story of a resourceful young woman making her way along a Michigan river. The Waters, published in 2024, is her most recent novel.
All three books share Campbell’s interest in Michigan settings and characters who live close to the land. Her novels tend to feature people dealing with difficult circumstances in rural communities, and her prose stays grounded and direct. These are standalone stories that can be read independently of each other.
