Bonnie Jo Campbell has published three short story collections over a span of thirteen years. Women and Other Animals came first in 2002, featuring stories about women in rural Michigan and their relationships with the natural world around them. American Salvage followed in 2009 and was a National Book Award finalist, bringing Campbell national recognition for her stories about small-town economic hardship.
Mothers, Tell Your Daughters, published in 2015, continued Campbell’s focus on women’s lives in the rural Midwest. The stories in this collection deal with the bonds between mothers and daughters, often in difficult or dangerous situations. All three collections share Campbell’s direct writing style and her deep familiarity with the landscapes and communities she writes about.
