Tad Williams’ Bobby Dollar series is a departure from his epic fantasy work. Set in modern-day San Francisco, it follows an angel named Bobby Dollar whose job is to argue for the souls of the recently dead before a heavenly court. When a soul goes missing, Bobby finds himself caught between Heaven, Hell, and forces he does not fully understand.
The series has four entries: three full novels and a shorter work, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlepig. The tone is closer to hardboiled detective fiction than to the sweeping fantasies Williams is known for, with Bobby narrating in a wry, first-person voice. It showed that Williams could work in a very different register while still building a world with its own rules and history.
