The Black Magick graphic novels combine crime fiction with urban fantasy. Detective Rowan Black works homicides in Portsmouth while secretly practicing witchcraft as part of an ancient coven. When a suspect at a hostage scene knows her secret, both worlds begin to unravel. The series ran three volumes from 2016 to 2020.
Rucka and artist Nicola Scott created a visually striking series, rendered primarily in black and white with color used sparingly for magical elements. The approach underscores the divide between Rowan’s mundane police work and her hidden supernatural life.
