The Black Dog Bay series is set in a fictional Delaware seaside town that has earned a reputation as “the best place in America to bounce back from your breakup.” Each book follows a different woman who arrives in town at a low point and finds unexpected romance and community. The series name comes from a local legend involving a black dog that appears on the beach.
Starting with Cure for the Common Breakup (2014) and running through In Dog We Trust (2019), the five novels are connected by their setting and a cast of recurring side characters but tell independent love stories. The tone is light and funny, with Kendrick balancing romantic comedy with questions about starting over and figuring out what you actually want from life.
