The Black Country series is Lindsey Hutchinson’s first and largest connected work. The six books, published between 2017 and 2018, are set in the industrial Midlands during the Victorian era. The Workhouse Children (2017) launched the series with a story about life in a workhouse, and subsequent books explore different aspects of working-class hardship.
The series includes The Wives’ Revenge, The Lost Sisters, The Orphan Girl, The Girl on the Doorstep, and Fallen Women. Each book tells its own story within the shared Black Country setting, drawing on the real history of a region defined by its factories, canals, and close-knit communities.
