The Birthright trilogy imagines a near-future world where chocolate, caffeine, and other common goods have been made illegal. The series follows Anya Balanchine, a teenage girl whose family runs a major chocolate crime syndicate in New York City. When her father dies, Anya inherits both his legacy and his enemies.
Starting with All These Things I’ve Done (2011) and continuing through Because It Is My Blood and In the Age of Love and Chocolate, the trilogy tracks Anya as she tries to forge her own path in a world that keeps pulling her back into the family business. Zevin uses the dystopian setting to explore questions about personal responsibility, family loyalty, and what happens when ordinary things become forbidden.
