Billy Bob Holland follows a former Texas Ranger turned lawyer across four books. Cimarron Rose (1997), which won the Edgar Award, introduced Billy Bob as a man haunted by a fatal shooting, now practicing law in a small Texas town where his cases keep dragging him back into the violence he tried to leave behind.
Heartwood (1999), Bitterroot (2001), and In the Moon of Red Ponies (2004) continued the series, taking Billy Bob from Texas to Montana while exploring the same themes of guilt, redemption, and the impossibility of escaping one’s past that run through all of Burke’s work.
