Billie Letts published four standalone novels between 1995 and 2005. Where the Heart Is (1995) made her famous, telling the story of a young woman who secretly lives in a Walmart after being abandoned by her boyfriend. The Honk and Holler Opening Soon (1998) is set in a roadside cafe in small-town Oklahoma and follows a cast of locals dealing with their own struggles.
Shoot the Moon (2004) moves between Oklahoma and California, while Made in the U.S.A. (2005) follows two orphaned children trying to stay together. All four novels share Letts’s attention to small-town American life and her ability to find both comedy and heartbreak in everyday situations.
