Between the Lines follows Delilah, a fifteen-year-old bookworm and social outcast who discovers that Prince Oliver, the hero of her favorite fairy tale, is alive and aware inside the pages of his book. Oliver wants to escape his scripted life, and together he and Delilah try to find a way to pull him out of the story. The sequel, Off the Page (2015), picks up after Oliver has entered the real world.
The series was co-written by Picoult and her daughter Samantha van Leer, who came up with the original concept as a teenager. The collaboration mixes fairy tale adventure with the everyday awkwardness of high school. It is lighter in tone than Picoult’s adult novels, aimed at a younger audience while still dealing with questions about identity and belonging.
