The Benny Imura series begins with Rot & Ruin (2010) and follows fifteen-year-old Benny as he enters the dangerous world beyond the fences that protect his settlement. The series uses an ampersand naming convention: Rot & Ruin, Dust & Decay, Flesh & Bone, Fire & Ash, and the final collection Bits & Pieces. Two interstitial pieces, In the Land of the Dead and First Night Memories, fill in story between the main novels.
Jonathan Maberry wrote the series for young adult readers but did not shy away from the horror of the zombie apocalypse. The books balance fast-paced action with thoughtful questions about humanity and violence. Benny’s journey from frightened kid to capable fighter is the emotional backbone of the series.
