The Belt City Anthologies are a series of essay collections published by Belt Publishing that focus on life in Rust Belt and Midwestern cities. Each volume gathers writing from people who live in or have deep ties to a particular city, resulting in collections that mix personal essays, journalism, history, and humor. The series started in 2014 with The Cleveland Anthology and A Detroit Anthology.
From there, the series expanded to cover Youngstown, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Akron, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Louisville, Gary, Dayton, and Indianapolis. The books give voice to places that are often discussed in broad economic terms but rarely heard from on their own terms. Writers in these anthologies talk about neighborhoods, food, jobs, race, and what it means to stay in or leave a city that the rest of the country has written off. The result is an ongoing record of Midwestern and Rust Belt identity told by the people who live it.
