After wrapping up the Hush, Hush saga, Becca Fitzpatrick shifted away from paranormal romance and into YA thrillers. Black Ice (2014) follows two college girls on a road trip in the Teton Range who take shelter in a remote cabin, only to find that the men inside are not who they claim to be. The book trades angels and Nephilim for a more grounded kind of danger.
Dangerous Lies (2015) is a witness protection story. The main character is relocated to a small town in Nebraska after witnessing a crime, and she has to build a new identity while keeping her past hidden. Both books showed that Fitzpatrick could write tense, page-turning fiction outside the supernatural genre. They are darker in tone than the Hush, Hush series and work well for readers who want YA suspense with female protagonists in high-pressure situations.
