Velmal’s Revenge gives one of the series’ recurring villains a dedicated story arc, letting the threat feel personal rather than incidental. Tom faces a set of beasts specifically sent to destroy him and Avantia by a wizard with a score to settle, which changes the dynamic from earlier arcs where the danger was more general.
The eight books in the arc span three years of publication, from familiar 2008 beasts like Torgor the Minotaur and Tusk the Mighty Mammoth to newer foes introduced in 2015 and 2016, including Quagos the Armoured Beetle and Plexor the Raging Reptile. The returning beasts serve as benchmarks for how far Tom has come, while the new ones push his abilities further.
