Beast Quest launched in 2007 and immediately found an audience with young readers looking for fast-moving adventure stories. Each book sends Tom on a new quest to find and free a magical beast that has been put under an evil spell by the wizard Malvel. The beasts range from fire dragons to sea serpents to snow monsters, and each book can be read as a standalone adventure while still fitting into a larger ongoing story.
The original series introduces the world of Avantia and the core characters: Tom, his best friend Elenna, her wolf Silver, and her eagle Storm the horse. The books are written for readers aged 7-11, with short chapters, plenty of action, and vivid creature descriptions that make each beast memorable.
This first series established the template that would carry through hundreds of follow-up books. Tom earns tokens from each freed beast to upgrade his armor and equipment, giving readers a satisfying sense of progression as they work through the series. The Complete Book of Beasts, a reference volume published in 2012, rounds out this entry in the catalog.
