All Men Are Brothers is Pearl S. Buck’s English translation of Shui Hu Zhuan, the fourteenth-century Chinese classic also known as Water Margin or Outlaws of the Marsh. The original novel follows 108 outlaws who gather at a mountain stronghold during the Song Dynasty, and it holds a place in Chinese literary culture comparable to that of the great European epics.
Buck’s translation was among the first widely available English versions of the text and drew on her deep familiarity with classical Chinese literature. The work sits apart from her original fiction but reflects the same engagement with Chinese culture and history that runs through her novels.
