The Atlanta Burns series by Chuck Wendig started as the self-published novella Shotgun Gravy in 2011 before Amazon’s 47North imprint picked it up for a full novel treatment. The story centers on Atlanta Burns, a teenage girl living in a small Pennsylvania town who has already survived a terrible ordeal before the first page. When she sees people being hurt and nobody stepping in, she decides to do something about it herself.
What makes these books stand out in YA fiction is Wendig’s willingness to address ugly subject matter head-on. Atlanta deals with hate groups, animal cruelty, drug distribution, and systemic corruption, all while being a teenager who should be worrying about homework. The tone is gritty and the violence is real, which puts the series closer to crime fiction than typical young adult fare.
The series began with two novellas (Shotgun Gravy and Bait Dog) before the full-length novel Atlanta Burns collected and expanded the story in 2015. The Hunt followed in 2016 as a direct sequel.
