Astrid Scholte’s three standalone novels each take a different angle on YA genre fiction. Four Dead Queens is a locked-room-style mystery set in a divided fantasy kingdom, where a thief gets drawn into a conspiracy involving the four queens. The Vanishing Deep moves into science fiction territory, following Lyra, who can resurrect the dead for 24 hours, as she uses that ability to reach her sister and uncovers a darker truth about how her sister died.
League of Liars, published in 2022, rounds out the trio with a courtroom thriller set in a world where magic is criminal. Five teenage defendants with illegal abilities must prove their innocence in a high-profile trial while uncovering what really happened. Each of the three books works as a complete story, so readers can pick up any of them without prior knowledge of the others.
