The Assured series by Nicholas Rhea is a departure from his crime fiction. The four books follow Matthew Taylor, a former butcher who takes a job as a local insurance agent for Premier Assurance in the 1950s, covering the rural area of Delverdale deep in the North York Moors.
The series has a similar tone to the Constable Nick books, with episodic encounters and eccentric Yorkshire characters. Clients sometimes pay in goods rather than cash, and Matthew’s rounds through the countryside provide the framework for gentle humor and slice-of-life storytelling. The books were published between 2004 and 2007.
