Jonathan Wood’s Arthur Wallace series drops an ordinary British detective into a world of Lovecraftian horrors and secret government agencies. Starting with No Hero in 2011, the four-book series follows Arthur as he joins a covert organization tasked with keeping supernatural threats in check, despite being woefully unqualified for the job.
The series draws comedy from the gap between Arthur’s everyday sensibility and the cosmic-scale weirdness he encounters. Each book raises the stakes while keeping Arthur grounded as a character who would much rather be solving normal crimes. The series wrapped up with Broken Hero in 2016, delivering a complete arc for its reluctant hero.
