Arthur Hailey’s standalone novels follow a consistent approach: take an industry or institution, research it thoroughly, and build a page-turning drama around the people who keep it running. Flight into Danger (1958) started with aviation and launched Hailey’s career. The Final Diagnosis (1959) moved to a hospital, and In High Places (1961) took on Canadian politics.
Hotel (1965) and Airport (1968) were the breakthroughs that made Hailey one of the bestselling novelists of his era. Airport alone sold more than twelve million copies and its 1970 film adaptation helped create the disaster movie genre. Wheels (1971) examined the Detroit auto industry, The Moneychangers (1975) explored banking, Overload (1978) looked at the power grid, and Strong Medicine (1984) took on pharmaceuticals. The Evening News (1990) covered television journalism, and Detective (1997) was his final novel, set in the world of police investigation.
