Arthur Beauchamp is one of the most recognizable characters in Canadian crime fiction. Created by William Deverell, himself a veteran criminal lawyer, Beauchamp is a defense attorney who has retreated to Garibaldi Island in British Columbia. His retirement never lasts long, though, as old colleagues and new clients keep pulling him back into the courtroom.
The series began with Trial of Passion in 1997, which won both the Hammett Prize and the Arthur Ellis Award. Each novel presents a new case for Beauchamp to untangle, blending courtroom procedure with the quieter rhythms of island life. The books also have a streak of dry humor, and several entries have been shortlisted for comedy prizes. There are nine novels in the series so far, with The Long-Shot Trial published in 2024.
