Arnold Bennett’s 23 standalone novels cover the full range of his career, from the Edwardian period through to posthumous publications assembled after his death in 1931. These are the novels that fall outside his Five Towns and Clayhanger series, though many still draw on the same interests in money, class, and domestic routine.
Riceyman Steps (1923), set in a miserly London bookseller’s household, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Imperial Palace (1930) is a sprawling novel about the running of a luxury hotel. Earlier works like Leonora (1903) and The Price of Love (1914) are quieter studies of women constrained by their social circumstances. The Pretty Lady (1918) and Lord Raingo (1926) deal with wartime and political life. Stroke of Luck and Dream of Destiny (1975) collects an unfinished novel left at Bennett’s death.
