Mr. Lincoln’s Army (1951) introduces the Army of the Potomac in its earliest, most disorganized phase, when political generals and confused strategy nearly lost the war before it began. Glory Road (1952) picks up the story through the terrible battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.
A Stillness at Appomattox (1953) covers Grant’s arrival and the grinding final campaign. Catton’s strength is in making the reader feel what it was like to be there, writing about common soldiers with as much care as he gives to generals.
