Ariel Kaplan’s two standalone novels are both set in the high-pressure world of high school and the college admissions process. We Regret to Inform You (2018) follows Mischa Abramavicius, a student who gets rejected from every college she applied to and sets out to figure out why. The book is funny, fast-paced, and honest about the anxiety that surrounds getting into the “right” school.
We Are the Perfect Girl (2019) takes on a different angle of teen life, looking at the gap between who people really are and the version of themselves they put on display. Both novels are contemporary YA with a sharp sense of humor and characters who feel genuine. They can be read in any order since they are not connected by plot or characters.
