The Appalachian Roots series by Janice Cole Hopkins was her first published series, beginning with Cleared For Planting (2014). The four books follow characters through the challenges of Appalachian life: planting and farming, surviving in harsh conditions, enduring the disruptions of war, and starting over in new places.
The series established Hopkins’s interest in regional American settings and the historical struggles of ordinary people, themes she would continue to explore across her many western romance series.
