The Anthony Monday Mysteries follow a boy in a small Minnesota town who keeps encountering magical artifacts and the dangers they bring. “The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn” (1978) kicks off the series with Anthony’s search for hidden treasure in the local library, while later books like “The Dark Secret of Weatherend” (1984) and “The Lamp from the Warlock’s Tomb” (1988) introduce increasingly supernatural threats.
The four-book series, concluding with “The Mansion in the Mist” (1992), shares the gothic atmosphere of Bellairs’ other children’s series. Anthony is a resourceful protagonist, and his friendship with librarian Miss Eells provides the adult-child partnership that characterizes Bellairs’ best work. The series is shorter than the Lewis Barnavelt or Johnny Dixon books but maintains the same quality of eerie, humorous storytelling.
