Anthony McCarten’s non-fiction books grow directly out of his interest in historical figures under pressure. The Darkest Hour (2017) examines Winston Churchill’s early days as Prime Minister during World War II, a period when Britain’s survival hung in the balance. The book became the basis for the Oscar-winning film starring Gary Oldman.
The Two Popes (2019) turns to a very different kind of power struggle, exploring the private meetings between Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (later Pope Francis) that led to an unprecedented papal transition. Warren and Bill (2024) is his most recent non-fiction work, examining the friendship between Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.
