The Annika Bengtzon series by Liza Marklund follows a crime reporter at a Stockholm evening tabloid as she investigates murders, terrorist attacks, and political scandals across Sweden. Starting with The Bomber in 1998, the series ran for eleven novels over nearly two decades.
Annika begins the series as a young reporter hungry to prove herself and gradually rises through the newsroom ranks while dealing with a troubled marriage, motherhood, and the personal toll of covering violent crime. Marklund draws on her own journalism career to give the series an authentic look at how Swedish media covers crime, and many of the plots touch on real-world issues like arms trafficking, honor killings, and government corruption.
The books were originally published in Swedish and have been translated into more than 30 languages. Some titles have appeared under different English names depending on the publisher (for example, Studio Sex has also been published as Exposed). The reading order below uses the most widely available English titles.
