Ann Leary’s four standalone novels span from 2008 to 2022. Outtakes from a Marriage (2008) was her fiction debut, followed by The Good House (2013), which became her best-known book. The novel’s portrait of Hildy Good, a real estate agent in a small New England town who refuses to acknowledge her alcoholism, earned strong reviews and was later adapted into a feature film.
The Children (2016) explores a family living on a Connecticut estate, and The Foundling (2022) is based on the true story of a Pennsylvania institution where women were committed for being “unfit.” Leary’s novels share an interest in women who present one face to the world while dealing with very different private realities.
