The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series is set in an alternate United States where vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures are legal citizens. Anita Blake works as an animator (someone who raises the dead for a living) and a legal vampire executioner in St. Louis.
The series began in 1993 with Guilty Pleasures and helped establish urban fantasy as a commercial genre. Anita is a necromancer with the ability to raise zombies and control the dead. She also works with the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team (RPIT), assisting police with supernatural crimes.
Laurell K. Hamilton’s series is known for its complex supernatural politics, featuring competing vampire masters, werewolf packs, and other shape-shifter groups. The early books focus heavily on mystery and action, while later books increasingly incorporate romance and explore Anita’s growing supernatural powers and complicated personal life.
