Andy Davidson’s three standalone novels are each set in a different part of the American South. In the Valley of the Sun (2017) is a vampire story set in 1980s West Texas, following a drifter who encounters something ancient at a run-down motel. The Boatman’s Daughter (2020) moves to the bayous of Arkansas, where a young woman named Miranda is caught between a corrupt preacher and the dark forces that haunt the swamp.
The Hollow Kind (2022) is set on a decaying turpentine estate in Georgia, where a mother and son discover that the property holds something alive in its roots. Each novel uses its Southern setting as more than just backdrop, making the landscape a character in the story. Davidson’s writing has been compared to authors like Joe R. Lansdale and Flannery O’Connor.
