Amy Makechnie’s standalone novels are middle grade stories that put young characters in situations where willpower alone is not enough. Her debut, The Unforgettable Guinevere St. Clair (2018), follows a 10-year-old who moves to Iowa and tries to solve the mystery of her mother’s lost memories after a traumatic brain injury. It earned a starred review from Kirkus.
Ten Thousand Tries (2021) is about a 12-year-old soccer player whose father has ALS. The title comes from the idea that enough practice can overcome any obstacle — a belief the book tests against a disease that doesn’t care about effort. Makechnie drew on her years as a soccer coach and anatomy teacher for the details.
Both books are published by Simon & Schuster and aimed at readers ages 8 to 12.
