Cinderland (2014) is Amy Jo Burns’s debut book and her only work of non-fiction to date. The memoir takes its name from the cinder-covered landscape of her hometown in western Pennsylvania, a place shaped by the steel industry and the kind of close community where everyone knows everyone else’s business.
The book recounts Burns’s childhood and her experience with a trusted local figure who turned out to be an abuser. It is a story about what it costs to tell the truth in a community that would rather look away. Cinderland was well received by critics and set the stage for the Appalachian themes Burns would continue to explore in her later fiction.
