Oz’s first published book was a short story collection, Where the Jackals Howl (1965), and he returned to the form throughout his career. The five collections span his entire publishing life, from kibbutz stories in the 1960s to the interconnected tales of Scenes from Village Life (2011), which follows residents of a small Israeli town haunted by the past — and possibly by actual ghosts.
The Amos Oz Reader (2009) provides a useful overview of his work across genres, while Unto Death (1969) and The Hill of Evil Counsel (1976) contain some of his most praised fiction in short form. For readers who want to sample his fiction before committing to a full novel, the story collections are an excellent place to start.
