The Amgash series is named after the fictional town of Amgash, Illinois, where protagonist Lucy Barton grew up in extreme poverty. The books follow Lucy as she becomes a writer in New York City, but the shadow of her childhood and her difficult relationship with her mother remain central to every story. My Name Is Lucy Barton (2016) begins with Lucy in a hospital bed, visited by her estranged mother, and unfolds as a quiet meditation on what families leave unsaid.
Anything Is Possible (2017) shifts focus to the people Lucy left behind in Amgash, telling linked stories about her siblings and former neighbors. Oh William! (2021) follows Lucy through her relationship with her first ex-husband, William, as they uncover secrets about his family. Lucy by the Sea (2022) takes place during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Lucy and William sheltering together in Maine.
Tell Me Everything (2024), the most recent book in the series, brings Lucy Barton into contact with Olive Kitteridge from Strout’s Pulitzer Prize-winning series. The novel is set in Crosby, Maine, and connects the two fictional worlds Strout has built across her career.
