Allen M. Steele’s standalone novels cover a wide range of science fiction territory. The Tranquillity Alternative from 1996 imagines an alternate history where the space race played out differently. OceanSpace explores deep-sea habitats, while Chronospace deals with time travel. Apollo’s Outcasts is a young adult novel set on a lunar colony, and V-S Day is an alternate history of World War II rocketry.
Arkwright from 2016 is perhaps his most ambitious standalone, following four generations of a family working toward interstellar travel. The book earned strong reviews for combining realistic near-future engineering with an emotional multigenerational story. Avengers of the Moon, a tribute to the classic Captain Future pulp stories, shows his range extending into more playful territory. Across all his standalones, Steele maintains his commitment to plausible science while telling stories about how space travel changes the people who pursue it.
