Alissa Nutting’s two standalone novels each tackle taboo subjects with dark humor. Tampa (2013) is narrated by a middle school teacher with predatory obsessions, told without moral commentary in a way that generated considerable controversy. Made for Love (2017) shifts to satire, following a woman who discovers her tech-billionaire husband has implanted a tracking chip in her brain.
Both novels share Nutting’s interest in power dynamics and control, though they operate in very different registers. Tampa is tense and psychological; Made for Love is absurd and funny.
