Lucky was published in 1999, three years before The Lovely Bones brought Sebold international fame. The memoir describes in direct, controlled prose what happened to Sebold during her freshman year at Syracuse University, where she was raped by a stranger, and the years that followed as she tried to rebuild her life and pursue a legal case. The title comes from a comment made to her by another assault survivor who said she was lucky to have survived.
The book examines not just the assault itself but the social and institutional responses to it: friends who didn’t know how to react, a legal system that put victims through their own ordeal, and the long psychological recovery that followed. Sebold wrote the memoir before her fiction career took off, and it shows a writer working through experience on the page with remarkable directness.
