Alice Sebold’s work as an editor and contributor to anthologies began shortly after the success of The Lovely Bones. The Secret Society of Demolition Writers (2005) brought together fourteen writers including Mary Gaitskill and Tom Perrotta for an unusual collaborative project: each author read only the preceding chapter before writing their own, creating a novel built from surprise and limited context.
She also served as guest editor for The Best American Short Stories 2009, one of the most prestigious annual short fiction series in the United States. Guest editors for this series choose the final selections from a larger pool gathered by series editor Heidi Pitlor, giving each annual edition a distinct sensibility. Her inclusion in The Picador Book of 40 (2012) rounds out her work in the short fiction space.
