Alexandra Villasante’s standalone novels tackle heavy subjects through the eyes of Latinx teenagers. The Grief Keeper (2019) is built around a speculative premise — a government program that can move grief from one person to another — but the real story is about an asylum-seeking family’s desperation to stay in the country and the lengths a sister will go to protect the people she loves.
Fireblooms (2025) is her follow-up, bringing another story with Latinx and queer representation to the young adult shelf. Both novels share Villasante’s interest in characters who are caught between cultures and trying to hold onto themselves while the world pushes back.
